Believe it or not, it\u2019s almost been 7 years<\/strong> since the Volkswagen Golf Mk8<\/strong> began production towards the end of 2019<\/strong>. In Mzansi<\/strong> the car arrived quite late<\/strong>, with the media launch<\/strong> taking place in August 2021<\/strong>. Part of the reason was that we only<\/strong> received the GTI<\/strong> model and not the others. Last year in 2025<\/strong> the lower model Golf 1.4 TSI<\/strong> became available to the market via the facelifted<\/strong> Golf range. Again, late in the game. This is why it looks to us like the Golf is still a new car<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, international markets know better. And they are currently being teased<\/strong> with an all-new Golf generation, the Mk9<\/strong>. Herewith is the car\u2019s silhouette<\/strong>, clearly a Golf design, but with what looks like some evolutionary details<\/strong>. As things stand, we have no further details, other than that the Golf 9 will carry a range of powertrain<\/strong> options that include plain petrol, Hybrid<\/strong> and fully-electric<\/strong>. Some fortunate<\/strong> markets might also received a diesel<\/strong> option or two, something I highly doubt will happen to Mzansi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its iconic and global status<\/strong>, the Golf has been under pressure<\/strong> over the past decade<\/strong>, thanks to the SUV revolution<\/strong>. Consumers have been shying away from it, opting instead to get into cars like the T-Roc<\/strong> and Tiguan<\/strong> among others. Therefore it remains to be seen whether the Golf 9 can recapture<\/strong> the Golf magic<\/strong> and bring back customers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
