Another month, another vehicle safety recall. <\/strong>And right now three big names<\/strong> are issuing these important vehicle recalls<\/strong>. Volkswagen<\/strong> Group Africa, Toyota<\/strong> South Africa Motors and Lexus<\/strong> (a division of the Toyota South Africa Motors) have stepped forward through the National Consumer Commission<\/strong> to address potential issues. These aren\u2019t signs of trouble; they\u2019re proof that manufacturers are taking responsibility before problems escalate<\/strong>. In a country where we drive long distances, tackle steep hills<\/strong>, and expect our vehicles to perform in tough conditions, this kind of transparency is aimed at building confidence<\/strong>. As things stand, there are no reported incidents<\/strong> involving the three vehicles mentioned here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start with the former people\u2019s champion, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo<\/strong>. Remember, the Vivo is manufactured here at the company\u2019s Plant in Kariega<\/strong>, just outside Gqeberha<\/strong> in the Eastern Cape. This recall hits hard because it affects approximately 25 729<\/strong> vehicles manufactured and sold between February 2025<\/strong> and February 2026<\/strong>. The issue is technical but straightforward<\/strong>: the rivet height on the handbrake<\/strong> lever might sit outside the required specification. That sounds small, but the consequences could be serious. Basically the handbrake could fail<\/strong> to engage properly, or \u2013 in rare cases \u2013 disengage unexpectedly. It\u2019s a genuine safety risk<\/strong>, especially for families and everyday commuters who rely on the Polo Vivo as one of the country\u2019s best-selling Passenger cars, year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkswagen is handling it the right way \u2013 a free inspection<\/strong> and a free fix<\/strong> at any Volkswagen dealership. Owners just need to book an appointment and the job gets done. In the meantime, park in gear<\/strong> or select \u201cP\u201d<\/strong> on automatics<\/strong> and avoid steep slopes until it\u2019s sorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On to Toyota. Toyota has recalled certain Land Cruiser 300<\/strong> (LC300) models because of an error in the Transmission Electronic Control Unit (T-ECU) programming. This glitch<\/strong> may stop the system from detecting and reporting solenoid failures<\/strong> in the 10-speed automatic<\/strong> transmission. The result? In certain gears the engine could over-rev, you might experience sudden loss of drive power, and \u2013 in the worst cases \u2013 transmission fluid could leak<\/strong>. That raises the risk of a crash<\/strong> or even fire<\/strong> if an ignition source is present. These are the legends<\/strong> that conquer the bush and tar roads alike, so Toyota is acting fast with free ECU reprogramming and any necessary repairs. If you own an LC300<\/strong> built in the relevant period, don\u2019t wait \u2013 get it checked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story is similar for the luxury side of the Toyota family. Lexus is recalling<\/strong> the LX500d<\/strong> in F-Sport and Overtrail<\/strong> variants for the same family of 10-speed automatic transmission faults: a solenoid issue that slips past the T-ECU could cause over-revving, loss of drive power, and those rare but serious fluid leaks that increase<\/strong> crash or fire risk. Only around 110 units<\/strong> are affected in Mzansi, but when you\u2019re behind the wheel of a flagship Lexus priced in the millions of Rands<\/strong>, every safety detail matters. Lexus owners enjoy premium<\/strong> service anyway, so the free fix should be handled with the usual five-star attention.
