Changan<\/strong> has launched a new entry-level SUV<\/strong> called the Uni-S in the Mzansi<\/strong> market. The Uni-S enters a very busy market<\/strong> segment, with competitors<\/strong> from pretty much every brand being represented. So what exactly is the Uni-S? well, the Uni-S is an SUV in the sub-compact segment<\/strong>, attempting to strike that sweet spot<\/strong> between nimble urban agility and the presence needed for weekend getaways or family hauls. The car is aimed squarely at the 25 to 45 age<\/strong> group, male and female, upper middle income<\/strong>. These are the buyers who want more than just transport; they seek a vehicle that fits seamlessly into an active, aspirational<\/strong> lifestyle, whether it\u2019s commuting<\/strong> to the office, heading out for a braai or simply making the daily school run feel a little more premium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I drove the Uni-S on a placid Gauteng<\/strong> day, around the Tshwane<\/strong> area. The exterior, while it has somewhat of a familiar look, is also different, with a large front grille commanding attention, LED headlights <\/strong>that hug the front grille, an LED light bar<\/strong> joining them for a sleek, uninterrupted glow, and rear light bars that echo the same modern confidence. From the side, the sloping roofline<\/strong> delivers an almost coupe-like<\/strong> stance, blending practicality<\/strong> with a touch of sporting elegance. It\u2019s the kind of silhouette that turns heads, one way or the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also noticed that the interior is pretty familiar<\/strong> too. A large screen<\/strong>, stretching across from the centre dashboard to the far right of the steering wheel divides itself into a 32.5cm<\/strong> touch bit and a 26cm LCD<\/strong> instrument cluster. Bluetooth<\/strong>, radio, Android Auto<\/strong> and Apple Carplay with mapping are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evolution, it seems, is the name of the game. Like so many successful models before it, the Uni-S doesn\u2019t try to reinvent<\/strong> the wheel but refines<\/strong> what works. The result is a vehicle that feels fresh yet reassuring, one that slots into daily life without demanding you learn new tricks. That coupe-inspired profile isn\u2019t just for show; it gives the Uni-S a dynamic<\/strong> presence that aligns beautifully<\/strong> with the aspirations of its target audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the bonnet, the Uni-S gets down to business with a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol<\/strong> engine (yet another familiar item) producing 138kW<\/strong> and 300Nm<\/strong> of torque. Paired as standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the powertrain offers good acceleration<\/strong> and overtaking, and is relatively smooth while crawling through heavy traffic, as we found out during our drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of what sets the Uni-S apart in this crowded segment is the chassis engineering<\/strong>. Independent multi-link rear suspension<\/strong> is standard across the range, delivering a composed<\/strong>, planted ride that soaks up varied road surfaces with surprising poise<\/strong>. Whether navigating<\/strong> potholed suburban streets or cruising the smooth curves<\/strong> of the freeway, the suspension keeps body movements in check and maintains a level of comfort that belies the competitive pricing. For the normal buyer, this translates into less fatigue<\/strong> on those longer family trips and a more engaging drive when the mood strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three trim line-up \u2013 CS<\/strong>, CL<\/strong> and CE<\/strong> \u2013 caters to different pockets within the target market. The entry-level CS is said to deliver the core Uni-S experience without compromise on the essentials, including that engine, slick transmission and sophisticated<\/strong> suspension. Step up to the CL and the enhancements begin to reflect a more discerning<\/strong> lifestyle, while the range-topping CE wraps it all in the fullest expression<\/strong> of the design language, features and equipment. Across the board, the Uni-S feels like a vehicle built with some insight<\/strong> into what buyers in this income bracket currently want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changan is planting some real roots in Mzansi, with 25 dealerships<\/strong> currently at play, and an additional 20 more<\/strong> being planned over the next 18 months. Last month \u2013 March 2026<\/strong> \u2013 Changan sold 118<\/strong> new cars, which is not a lot, but seems to be promising<\/strong> for a brand that\u2019s only been relaunched a few months ago. The Uni-S could assist in at least doubling<\/strong> that sales figure, if marketing<\/strong> and after-sales<\/strong> do their part properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
