Yolanda \u201cGirlie\u201d Lukhele came out with a standout debut in the first instalment of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa\u2019s GR Cup Hot Seat programme, proving that talent and determination translate across disciplines. The sim racer, popular content creator and emerging rally driver stepped into the high-pressure world of circuit racing at Pretoria\u2019s Zwartkops Raceway during Round 3 of the 2026 GR Cup season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swapping gravel for asphalt, Lukhele piloted the GR Yaris AT in the Media Challenge category against a competitive grid of experienced motoring journalists and broadcasters. While she arrived with solid rally experience, the tight, flowing layout of Zwartkops, with its demanding braking zones and close-quarters racing, presented a steep new learning curve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under cool, overcast skies on Friday, Lukhele steadily built pace and confidence. By Saturday, with clear conditions overhead, she put in a strong qualifying lap to secure fifth position. She then converted that into two confident race performances, claiming third place in class in both Race 1 and Race 2 to secure two podium finishes on her first-ever circuit racing weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than the results, though, the weekend offered Lukhele a raw introduction to the emotional rollercoaster of circuit racing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo sum up the GR Cup, wow, it was phenomenal,\u201d she said afterwards. \u201cIt was honestly an out-of-this-world experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lukhele was particularly impressed by the paddock\u2019s camaraderie. \u201cWhat stood out for me the most was how welcoming everybody was. The service crew, the drivers \u2013 everybody was so friendly and willing to help me improve. The drivers kept giving me advice and encouraging me throughout the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also experienced the intense highs and lows that define the sport: \u201cOne moment you have a great race or lap, and the next something goes wrong or you feel like you could have done better. I really felt the real pressure of motorsport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The enthusiastic support from spectators added another special touch, while she singled out the TGRSA technical crew for their tireless work in helping her adapt to the car. Lukhele believes the experience will pay dividends in her rally career. \u201cI\u2019d love to take what I learned from track racing and apply it to rally as well. This weekend really helped me grow as a driver.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GR Cup Hot Seat continues later in the season with broadcaster Kriya Gangiah at Killarney in September, followed by sports presenter Mpho Maboi back at Zwartkops in October.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
