BYD<\/strong> has announced a new plug-in Hybrid<\/strong> car called the Dolphin G DM-i<\/strong>. Unlike most recent plug-in Hybrid announcements, this car is not an SUV, but rather a 4.1 metre<\/strong> long hatchback<\/strong>, which is a market segment<\/strong> that is on the decline<\/strong> in a number of markets, including Mzansi<\/strong>. Conceived and designed for the European<\/strong> market mainly \u2013 with others to follow \u2013 the Dolphin G looks to bring a fresh<\/strong> new perspective into its segment, especially when one considered the claimed range<\/strong> by BYD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without saying anything about the plug-in Hybrid powertrain, BYD merely announced that the Dolphin G will sport<\/strong> that kind of propulsion<\/strong> system. On top of that it will achieve over 1 000km of range<\/strong> from both the petrol<\/strong> motor and the battery<\/strong> system. That is a first in the segment, where 800km is about as good as it gets from the likes of Volkswagen Polo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We believe the powertrain will be based on a turbocharged 1.5-litre<\/strong> engine, paired with an electric motor<\/strong>. Alternatively they could use a REEV<\/strong> \u2013 range extended electric vehicle \u2013 system, which basically means the engine would only be used to recharge the battery, rather than to actually run the car itself. Regardless, the Dolphin G DM-i should probably be a car that BYD strongly considers<\/strong> for the Mzansi<\/strong> market, just to shake everything up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
