Mzansi\u2019s automotive industry<\/strong> is charging ahead at breakneck speed<\/strong>, but the biggest question on everyone\u2019s mind is whether our aftersales technical talent<\/strong> can keep up with the rapid march of modern vehicle technology. That was the clear message from Hyundai<\/strong> Automotive South Africa CEO Stanley Anderson<\/strong> at the official launch of the new Motus Training Academy<\/strong> in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facility is set to train more than 2 000 students<\/strong> every year in critical areas such as mechatronics, electric energy vehicles<\/strong> (EEVs), advanced diagnostics<\/strong>, and high-tech<\/strong> servicing. In a country where the automotive sector punches well above its weight \u2013 contributing over 5.2% to GDP<\/strong> and supporting nearly 500 000 jobs<\/strong> \u2013 this kind of investment couldn\u2019t come at a better time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs the automotive industry evolves at an accelerated pace, the need for highly skilled technicians<\/strong> and artisans<\/strong> has never been greater,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cAcademies<\/strong> like this play a critical role in preparing young people for sustainable careers<\/strong> while ensuring the industry remains globally competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s spot on. Today\u2019s cars are rolling computers<\/strong> on wheels \u2013 packed with connected systems, digital diagnostics, and increasingly sophisticated electric powertrains<\/strong>. The aftersales<\/strong> side of the business must evolve just as quickly if Mzansi wants to stay in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyundai itself has been walking the talk. The company currently supports 338 apprentices<\/strong> across its 97-strong<\/strong> national dealer network, with women making up nearly 25%<\/strong> of the intake \u2013 a pleasing step towards greater inclusivity<\/strong> in a traditionally male-dominated<\/strong> field. Earlier this month, its youth employment programme drew a staggering 33 000 applications<\/strong>, underlining the huge appetite among young South Africans for opportunities<\/strong> in this dynamic sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe future of automotive retail and manufacturing<\/strong> will depend heavily on technical capability<\/strong> and continuous skills development,\u201d Anderson added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This push aligns perfectly with government\u2019s National Development Plan<\/strong> target of producing 30 000 artisans<\/strong> annually by 2030. With over 115 000 highly skilled jobs<\/strong> already in vehicle and component manufacturing, initiatives like the Motus Academy<\/strong> are vital for building a resilient, future-ready workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Mzansi\u2019s tough economic climate<\/strong>, turning passion for cars into proper careers isn\u2019t just smart \u2013 it\u2019s essential.
