Audi<\/strong> has launched the all-new Q3<\/strong> baby SUV to Mzansi<\/strong> media. The first-generation Q3 arrived in Mzansi back in April 2012<\/strong>, to a growing number of compact premium SUVs. Audi already had the Q7<\/strong> and Q5<\/strong> running around our streets, but of course needed something at the entry level to attract new buyers into the brand. Enter the Q3, with a rather bubbly personality<\/strong> and later on, a fiery RS version<\/strong>. Since then, over 8 000 Q3s<\/strong> have found new homes in Mzansi, with over 2 million<\/strong> globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Available in both normal SUV and coupe (aka the Sportback<\/strong> version), the new Q3 is certainly a looker, even in the most basic spec<\/strong>, which definitely appears basic nonetheless. The new split front grille shows different elements, with the headlights<\/strong> right at the top below the bonnet, the main element taking the central role, and the sides scooping to the sides in C-shape<\/strong>. The lower portion is wide, and elegant too. Perhaps worth noting is that the Q3 is offered with Matrix LED<\/strong> headlights, a first for the segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audi designed the side profile with some premium bits included, such as the metallic window frames<\/strong> and light alloy wheels measuring between 18 and 20-inches<\/strong> in diameter. Handsome in both SUV and Sporback looks, the Q3 has grown slightly from its predecessor, offering a little more interior space. Boot space itself is abundant, with up to 1 386 litres<\/strong> for the SUV and 1 289 litres<\/strong> for the Sportback when the rear seats are folded. Otherwise we are looking at 488 litres<\/strong> and 575 litres<\/strong> respectively. While at the back, another segment-first is the digital OLED lighting<\/strong> system, as well as Audi\u2019s illuminating red rings<\/strong>. The boot shape is rather a busy spot, with all sorts of lines cutting across, separating different areas. Thankfully the designers finally saw it fit to no longer bother with fake exhaust tailpipes<\/strong> anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might have been an oversight \u2013 doubt it \u2013 but Audi seems to have left out model designations<\/strong> out of their cars for some reason. Therefore it is almost impossible to know which one exactly one is driving. Yes, the confusing 30, 35, 40<\/strong> etc monikers did not endear themselves with enthusiasts much. But at least they told most of the story; diesel<\/strong>, or petrol<\/strong>, or really powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step inside, and the cabin<\/strong> tells the story of modern Audi thinking. The big news is the new infotainment system with its large curved touchscreen, split into a 32.5cm touch screen<\/strong> and a 30.2cm Audi Virtual Cockpit<\/strong> screens. It\u2019s crisp, responsive, and comes with Google Maps<\/strong>. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto<\/strong> are standard too. The multifunction steering wheel is shaped like old-generation Audi wheels, giving it a retro nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the upholstery, Audi has gone with fabrics made from 100% recycled<\/strong> polyester. It looks and feels premium, but there\u2019s real substance behind the sustainability talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the bonnet, the new Q3 offers two engine options. There\u2019s a petrol unit delivering 110kW<\/strong> and 250Nm<\/strong>, and the diesel, also 110kW<\/strong> but with a healthy 360Nm<\/strong> of torque. Both are fitted with the brand\u2019s 7-speed S Tronic<\/strong> transmission, which has bits of jerking<\/strong> whenever they seek the right gear. Especially on changedowns. Otherwise, once they are going, they are relatively smooth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the motoring landscape shifts with more SUVs flooding<\/strong> the market, the Audi Q3 reminds us why the German brand still sets certain benchmarks. It\u2019s refined without being boring<\/strong>, practical without being dull, and premium<\/strong> without losing touch with the realities of driving in Mzansi. If you\u2019re in the market for something in this segment, the new Q3 deserves a serious test drive.
