In what is sure to be a significant<\/strong> boost for Mzansi\u2019s<\/strong> automotive manufacturing<\/strong> landscape and everyday motorists, Chery South Africa<\/strong> has finally pulled back the curtain on its mother brand<\/strong> plans at the historic Rosslyn<\/strong> plant. The Tiggo 4 Cross<\/strong> will roll off the production line starting in 2027<\/strong>, joining Jetour T1, T2<\/strong> and Jaecoo J5<\/strong> products already set for local assembly. This is more than just another factory announcement<\/strong>; it\u2019s a clear signal that Chery is here for the long haul<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tiggo 4 Cross is aimed at the bustling<\/strong> (some might say \u201cbursting<\/strong> at the seams\u201d) compact SUV<\/strong> segment where South Africans do most of their daily driving. With its raised ride height, stylish crossover looks<\/strong>, and practical boot space, it seems right for our reality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As such, we expect localised production<\/strong> to bring down costs, improve parts availability<\/strong>, and potentially create new jobs in the Pretoria<\/strong> area. Rosslyn of course, has a proud history, not just because of Nissan<\/strong> that has sold its Plant to Chery, but also because of BMW<\/strong> and other automotive OEMs<\/strong> and suppliers that have settled<\/strong> in that area over the decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese brands like Chery have matured rapidly<\/strong>, delivering good engines, comprehensive safety suites, modern infotainment<\/strong>, and connectivity that rivals established<\/strong> players, very often at prices that leave more money in the pocket. Local production should sharpen that edge further, with potential benefits in warranty support<\/strong> and service networks. I will be watching with keen interest<\/strong> how pricing is affected by this move, if at all. Surely a locally-produced<\/strong> Chery Tiggo 4 Cross should be even cheaper<\/strong> than an imported unit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, success will depend on execution. Will build quality<\/strong> match the Chinese-build? Also, how will it stack up against the establishment<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably another big question<\/strong> is: will Chery also be manufacturing its own bakkie<\/strong> in Rosslyn, given the fact that bakkies sell so well in this country?
