Tata Motors<\/strong> returned to Mzansi<\/strong> in August 2025<\/strong>, with a plethora of new products, including the Tiago, Curvv, Punch<\/strong> and Harrier<\/strong>. At the glitzy<\/strong> launch event, Tata Motors South Africa CEO Thato Magasa<\/strong> promised more product for the year 2026<\/strong>. And the delivery has begun in earnest, with the new Tata Osprey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tata chose to not simply badge this one Nexon<\/strong>, the name it uses in its native India<\/strong>, and send it south. In India the Nexon is something of a phenomenon<\/strong>, with more than a million units<\/strong> bought since 2017<\/strong>. It has been India\u2019s number-one seller<\/strong> more than once, and 2025 was the first year it cleared 200 000<\/strong> units on its own. That is not a niche<\/strong> product. That is a national habit<\/strong> on four wheels. For this market the company chose a local<\/strong> name, Osprey<\/strong>, after the bird that hunts<\/strong> equally well over water, land and sky. Marketing poetry<\/strong> of course. But it also tells you how they want the car read: compact enough for the weekday<\/strong>, useful enough for the weekend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It sits in that sweet, crowded<\/strong> band of small SUVs that South Africans have been buying in droves over the past decade now. Total length is 3.995m<\/strong>, width is 1.8m, height 1.620m, and the wheelbase is 2.5m. Ground clearance is a claimed 208mm<\/strong>. The boot is 382 litres<\/strong> with the rear bench up, and the second row splits 60:40. Five<\/strong> people will fit. The fifth will not necessarily write home about it, but that is the segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The powertrain for this market is straightforward. A 1.2-litre<\/strong> three-cylinder turbo-petrol<\/strong> displacing 1 199cc, and making 88.2kW<\/strong> (we are just calling it 88kW) at 5 500rpm, 170Nm<\/strong> from 1 750 to 4 000rpm, while driving the front wheels<\/strong> through either a 5-speed<\/strong> manual or a 7-speed<\/strong> dual-clutch automatic (DCT). With a number of other competitors in this segment opting for fewer cogs on their \u2018boxes, it is quite refreshing<\/strong> to see Tata taking the bold<\/strong> and forward-thinking step of a 7-speed<\/strong> automatic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          On the exterior side, sequential LED daytime<\/strong> running lights and bi-function full LED headlamps sit on a raised bonnet. Higher specifications add a panoramic sunroof<\/strong>; also a unique<\/strong> selling point in the segment. Inside you get a two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated logo, a 26cm Harman<\/strong> touch screen and a matching 26cm digital cluster and Benecke-Kaliko ventilated leatherette<\/strong> on the seats. A 360-degree HD<\/strong> camera, front sensors, a Blind View Monitor<\/strong> and a reverse camera can be part of the kit list that used to live two classes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Safety is the line Tata will not let you skip, and they reckon they have the paper for it. The Osprey, as Nexon, was the first Indian car to earn a five-star Global NCAP<\/strong> rating. It also holds five stars from Bharat NCAP. Adult and child scores were the highest in that 2024 Global NCAP test, which is why Tata still calls it India\u2019s safest<\/strong> car. Six airbags<\/strong>, ESP, ABS<\/strong> with EBD, ISOFIX and a seatbelt reminder for every occupant are standard. Level 2 ADAS sits on the upper wrungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Osprey arrives as the brand, back for only a year now, is already pushing past 600 monthly<\/strong> retail units and opening dealership number 47<\/strong>. Punch, Curvv, Harrier and Tiago opened the door. This one plans to drive through<\/strong> it and stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
