The GWM Tank 300<\/strong> has hit Mzansi<\/strong> shores. I went to media launch with zero expectations<\/strong> and I\u2019m honestly glad I did that. Tank 300 is a robust and rugged SUV that perfectly suits the adventurous spirit of many South Africans<\/strong>. With the SUV market growing so much, the Tank 300 should be right at home here. Pitted against the Ford Everest<\/strong> and Toyota Fortuner<\/strong>, it\u2019s quite clear that the Chinese<\/strong> mean business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, I thought, oh, a slightly bigger<\/strong> Jimny. I\u2019m happy to report that, I was completely wrong<\/strong>. Once you step inside, you\u2019re greeted by a luxurious interior<\/strong>. Reminiscent of some German<\/strong> cars. It is after all positioned as a premium vehicle<\/strong> under the GWM banner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mean you have electrically adjustable<\/strong> quilted leather seats, leather on the door panels and steering wheel for starters. The only thing to note on the steering wheel<\/strong>, is that you can\u2019t pull it closer to you \u2013 telescopic adjustment<\/strong>. You can only adjust it up or down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying with the interior, you have the dual 31.2cm high-definition LCD screen<\/strong> that stretches across the dashboard<\/strong>, forming one large screen that includes the instrument cluster and infotainment<\/strong> screen that boats wireless Apple CarPlay<\/strong> and Android Auto<\/strong>. The screen also displays images from the various external cameras, which come in very handy when going off road. More on this in just a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type A and C charge points, with the HEV<\/strong> model throwing in a 220V power<\/strong> output in the boot, plus wireless charging between the front seats. Available to those die-hard off-roaders<\/strong>, is information on altitude, air pressure<\/strong>, compass, body roll angle, steering wheel<\/strong> and wheel angle and tyre pressure. There\u2019s plenty storage space in the cabin plus a huge boot space, big enough to carry all your camping necessities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of performance: what a comfortable<\/strong> and responsive<\/strong> drive on the road. The drive on the N1 to Polokwane<\/strong> was smooth, with no road noise. The GWM Tank 300 is available in two distinct drivetrain and power configurations. The Hybrid Electric<\/strong> version of the car (which we were in), boasts a combined power (petrol\/electric): 255kW<\/strong> (Petrol engine: 180kW<\/strong> at 5 500rpm \u2013 6 000 rpm and electric motor 78kW) Combined torque (petrol\/electric): 648Nm<\/strong> (Petrol engine: 380Nm at 1 700 rpm \u2013 4 000 rpm and electric motor 268Nm<\/strong>) Transmission: 9-speed Hydraulic Automatic gearbox<\/strong> with a claimed fuel consumption of: 8.4 litres\/100 km<\/strong> in the combined cycle<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The petrol version boats a 162kW<\/strong> at 5 500 rpm, with maximum torque of 380Nm<\/strong>, between 1 800 rpm and 3 600 rpm, with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and claimed consumption of 9.5L\/100 km<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Off road features<\/strong> include what quickly became one of my favourite<\/strong> features in the GWM Tank 300. The specialised Crawl Cruise Control<\/strong> system, used for slow-and-steady traction over tricky terrain<\/strong>, such as rocky river crossings<\/strong> or down steep slopes. Going up a rocky hill<\/strong> was an absolute breeze because I just sat back and watched the car navigate<\/strong> the terrain. All I needed to do is steer the vehicle, with the assistance of the surrounding camera<\/strong> views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have all the other features you\u2019d expect in a luxury car<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
