For most Mzansi<\/strong> motorists the name Yangwang<\/strong> is completely unknown. BYD\u2019s luxury arm<\/strong> has already shown what it can do with the floating U8<\/strong> and the U9<\/strong> hyper car. But apparently the forthcoming Altior<\/strong> marks a bolder statement for the brand and BYD as a whole. This is the brand\u2019s first true executive flagship sedan, and it is being prepared to occupy the same conversation as the Rolls-Royce Ghost<\/strong> and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officially named in late October, the Altior (Dingyao<\/strong> in China) is scheduled for its global debut in the United Arab Emirates<\/strong> in pretty soon. At roughly 5.5 metres<\/strong> long with a 3.3m wheelbase<\/strong>, it occupies proper chauffeur<\/strong> territory. Teasers reveal rear-hinged coach doors that open nearly 90 degrees<\/strong>, a first for any BYD model, plus a roof-mounted LiDAR<\/strong> sensor and a broad, upright front end that is rumoured<\/strong> to have taken more than 100 design proposals<\/strong> to settle. The proportions<\/strong> are deliberate: long, formal and unapologetically imposing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technical<\/strong> details<\/strong> remain under wraps until the reveal, though the expectation<\/strong> is a sophisticated electric<\/strong> and\/ or plug-in Hybrid<\/strong> architecture drawing on Yangwang\u2019s existing e4 quad-motor<\/strong> and DiSus suspension<\/strong> technologies. A solid-state battery<\/strong> system has been speculated, but BYD has previously pointed to 2027<\/strong> for its first production solid-state vehicle, so timing may be dicey on that front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We obviously don\u2019t know what the price<\/strong> is going to be yet, but do expect it to undercut<\/strong> its European and American<\/strong> counterparts quite significantly<\/strong>, while offering a suite of Chinese-definition<\/strong> luxury, tech and comfort levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
