Last week a United States of America Appeals Court<\/strong> ruled that not all <\/strong>of President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/strong> recent tariffs<\/strong> were legal<\/strong>. The court handed down judgment that while the President of the US has wide ranging powers<\/strong> in terms of a law from 1977<\/strong>, unilaterally imposing certain tariffs does not fall into one of those powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simultaneously, the Court has given the Trump administration until early October<\/strong> this year to file an appeal<\/strong> \u2013 should it wish to \u2013 with the Supreme Court<\/strong>. Until then, the tariffs will remain in place. Addressing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act<\/strong> or IEEPA \u2013 which Trump used to enact the tariffs –  the court said, inter alia<\/em>: \u201cIt seems unlikely that Congress<\/strong> intended, in enacting IEEPA, to depart from its past practice and grant the President unlimited authority to impose tariffs. The statute<\/strong> neither mentions tariffs (or any of its synonyms<\/strong>) nor has procedural safeguards that contain clear limits on the President\u2019s power to impose tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
