W<\/strong>hile this is not be indicative<\/strong> of anything as far as Mzansi<\/strong> is concerned, it may be worth noting that BMW<\/strong> has priced its new i8 <\/strong>super hybrid in the United States<\/strong>. Basic trim is going to cost US$135 700, which is about R1.4 million<\/strong> over here. However, should we believe that this starting price is possible here too, then we can certainly dream<\/strong> of a likely final launch price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking into account all sorts of\u00a0import duties,<\/strong>\u00a0other government taxes and margins, we reckon that a starting price of\u00a0R1.95 million<\/strong>\u00a0would not be too bad for our local i8. Then again, this being a sort of\u00a0halo<\/strong>, highly\u00a0technologically-advanced<\/strong>\u00a0sports car, BMW would probably want to put a nice premium on it and price it just above the\u00a0R2 million<\/strong>\u00a0mark. Who knows.What we do know is that the i8 is powered by a pair made up of a\u00a01.5-litre petrol turbo<\/strong>\u00a0engine displacing three cylinders and developing\u00a0170kW<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0320Nm<\/strong>\u00a0of torque. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other partner is an electric motor accompanied by a liquid-cooled\u00a05kWh\u00a0<\/strong>lithium-ion battery pack making\u00a096kW<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0250Nm<\/strong>. All in all we are looking at a system output of\u00a0266kW<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0570Nm<\/strong>\u00a0of torque.BMW says it can sprint from 0 \u2013 100km\/h in just\u00a04.4 seconds<\/strong>\u00a0and achieve a top speed of\u00a0250km\/h<\/strong>.\u00a0Amazingly<\/strong>\u00a0they are quoting\u00a02.5 litres per 100km<\/strong>\u00a0for average fuel consumption, with the i8 able to travel distances of up to\u00a035km<\/strong>\u00a0on electricity alone (that is with the petrol engine switched off).
The BMW i8 is scheduled to begin sales in\u00a0South Africa in 2015<\/strong>, months after the smaller, more practical\u00a0i3 all-electric<\/strong>\u00a0car.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
