The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which officially lands in\u00a0Mzansi<\/strong>\u00a0within weeks (although we\u2019ve seen a few on the roads already), is bringing some interesting\u00a0new powertrains<\/strong>. One of these is the new\u00a0S 500 Hybrid<\/strong>\u00a0range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top of the pops is the Plug-in Hybrid which features several\u00a0fuel-saving technologies<\/strong>\u00a0that one would sit in awe about, especially for a car its size. The main thrust of things comes from a\u00a03.0-litre V6 turbo petrol<\/strong>\u00a0engine, and an\u00a080kW<\/strong>,\u00a0340Nmelectric motor<\/strong>\u00a0with rechargeable batteries. That means it will either recharge using\u00a0on-board<\/strong>\u00a0systems, or you can literally plug into the wall socket at home or work to fill up the lithium-ion batteries. Under certain conditions it can go for up to\u00a030km<\/strong>\u00a0on electric power alone, thus saving\u00a0litres<\/strong>\u00a0and litres of fuel.The\u00a0V6<\/strong>\u00a0puts out its own\u00a0245kW<\/strong>\u00a0of power and\u00a0480Nm<\/strong>\u00a0of torque. In terms of performance, the\u00a0S 500 Hybrid\u00a0<\/strong>will push off from 0 \u2013 100km\/h in\u00a05.5 seconds<\/strong>, according to Mercedes-Benz. Top speed is set at the usual\u00a0250km\/h<\/strong>. Amazing is the claimed average fuel consumption of only\u00a03 litres per 100km<\/strong>\u00a0and C02 emissions of\u00a069 g\/km<\/strong>. Unbelievable. Even if you could double that, which you can under realistic conditions, you still get\u00a06 litres per 100km<\/strong>\u00a0and a tank range of about\u00a01 200km<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The V6 engine is used for charging the battery as little as possible and only at suitable and most\u00a0efficient<\/strong>\u00a0operating points. It is switched off any time the vehicle is coasting and its\u00a0drag<\/strong>\u00a0torque when rolling is used by the electric motor as\u00a0recuperation<\/strong>\u00a0torque.The other two hybrids in the range are the\u00a0S 400 Hybrid<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0S 300 BlueTec Hybrid<\/strong>. The former pushes out\u00a0225kW<\/strong>\u00a0(370Nm<\/strong>) and\u00a020kW<\/strong>\u00a0(250Nm<\/strong>) from the engine and electric motor respectively. Merc says it returns\u00a06.3 litres per 100km<\/strong>. Then there\u2019s the baby\u00a0S 300 BlueTec Hybrid<\/strong>, which would probably be our choice as it uses the same motor as the new facelift\u00a0E 300 BlueTec Hybrid<\/strong>. Maximum power is\u00a0150kW<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0500Nm<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a02.2-litre turbo diesel<\/strong>, while the electric motor gives\u00a020kW<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0250Nm<\/strong>. It is capable of a\u00a04.4 litres per 100km<\/strong>\u00a0average.Mercedes-Benz South Africa has not yet told us which of these will be made available here. We\u2019d pick any of them to be honest. They all\u00a0promise<\/strong>\u00a0very good things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
