<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MG Motor<\/strong> seems to be establishing itself at a strong pace in the Mzansi market<\/strong>. With a plan to open around a total of 50 dealerships<\/strong> by the end of this year, the Chinese<\/strong> company\u2019s ambitions are set to be properly tested<\/strong> in the next few years. That\u2019s good news<\/strong>, because it means MG has seen some traction<\/strong> and is keen to plant<\/strong> a few more roots<\/strong> in this country. Their latest product to hit the market is the ZS Pro, a compact family SUV priced very competitively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I got to drive the ZS Pro in the Gauteng<\/strong> and North West<\/strong> region during its media launch<\/strong> earlier today. From the new plush flagship<\/strong> dealership nestled in Fourways<\/strong>, my driving partner Bryan Kayavhu<\/strong> from Driven<\/strong> magazine, and I made our way through some Johannesburg traffic<\/strong>, out towards the Cradle of Mankind<\/strong>, then to the Lanseria Airport<\/strong> area, and back to Fourways<\/strong>. Definitely some of the prettier scenic routes. However, it would not be Mzansi<\/strong> had we not met with our fair share<\/strong> of uneven road surfaces, and plenty of potholes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The perfect scene to test the ZS Pro\u2019s road compliance<\/strong> then. Before we get there, perhaps it would be amiss of me not to briefly describe the car\u2019s looks. MG reckons the designers got it right and avoided the recent \u201cgeneric look<\/strong>\u201d brought through by Chinese<\/strong> automotive products into the market. I partially agree. It is a pleasant-looking car for sure, with a different front end featuring slanting LED headlights <\/strong>(MG calls them \u201cPredator Eye<\/strong> headlights\u201d) and a gaping, wide lower grille. The side profile shows a sturdy<\/strong> stance, with several highlights<\/strong> that include indicator lights on the side mirrors, faux chrome strips on the lower window seals and bottom door ends, and black bumper cladding<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the rear there are large arrow-shaped lights, a cap roof spoiler and some more black bumper cladding. Buyers will have a choice of either 17 or 18-inch alloy<\/strong> wheels, depending on the model they choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the MG ZS Pro has been fitted with what appears to be high quality<\/strong> materials that are soft to the touch, especially on the dashboard<\/strong> and door panels. The infotainment<\/strong> system is based on either a 26cm<\/strong> or 32cm touch screen<\/strong> system with all the expected features in place, including radio, Bluetooth<\/strong>, Apple Carplay, Android Auto<\/strong> and the ADAs safety systems controls. In the centre console is the rather large gear lever for the CVT<\/strong> gearbox, a wireless charging<\/strong> pad, engine start\/stop button<\/strong>, two cup holders and two USB<\/strong> ports for different types of chargers. All well-placed, and easy to reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As far as the powertrain<\/strong> is concerned, MG has used a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol<\/strong> engine that produces some 125kW<\/strong> of power and 275Nm<\/strong> of torque. As previously stated, it is paired with a CVT transmission. MG claims a 0 \u2013 100km\/h<\/strong> sprint run of 8.5 seconds<\/strong>, with average fuel consumption said to be 6.9 litres per 100km<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During our launch drive the powertrain components<\/strong> worked well together, with the CVT not exhibiting<\/strong> much droning at all. The ride felt comfortable, and power delivery<\/strong> was consistent across the power band, with a minimum amount of turbo lag to be felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MG will be looking to add more products to its line-up over the coming year, adding to the entry-level MG3<\/strong> hatch, the baseline ZS<\/strong> SUV, the mid-sized HS<\/strong> SUV and the flagship Cyberstar<\/strong> electric sports coupe. With the ZS Pro they are targeting<\/strong> the likes of Toyota Corolla Cross and GWM Haval Jolion. Formidable company indeed, but this MG product should be able to hold its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
