The Toyota Hilux<\/strong> occupies a very special place<\/strong> in the hearts<\/strong> and minds of South Africans.<\/strong> Considering the vast number of vehicle models<\/strong> currently available for all types of consumers<\/strong>, that around 3 000<\/strong> brand new Hilux<\/strong> units are sold<\/strong> in Mzansi<\/strong> each month bears testimony to this phenomenon<\/strong>. And now Toyota has introduced what should be yet another Hilux hit; the Legend 55<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a closer look at it in a two-part series<\/strong> of articles, starting here. Unlike previous Legend models such as the Legend 50<\/strong> and 45<\/strong>, the 55 will not be a limited edition<\/strong> model in terms of how long it stays on the market. In fact, the question of its market availability is only answered by what it will be replaced by in 2026<\/strong>. Something for all to look forward<\/strong> to without a doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, let\u2019s get into the Legend 55 nitty gritties, shall we. Toyota is offering potential buyers the choice of either the Xtra cab<\/strong> or double cab<\/strong> options. Remember, Xtra cab falls between single and double cab in terms of spatial use, having let go of rear seats in favour<\/strong> of a more compact<\/strong> storage facility, as well as a longer rear load bed<\/strong> than that of a double cab. Visually there are a number of stand-out highlights<\/strong> that the car carries. The front end has a different look from existing Legend models, with its own front grille design. Those LED lights<\/strong> give it a fresh but familiar pose, while the protective front bash plate not only adds some drama, but is actually there for a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The side profile<\/strong> introduces the first Legend 55 badges, unmissable<\/strong> on both front doors. Side steps make it easier to enter the Legend 55, while the black<\/strong> door handles<\/strong> provide extra appeal. There is a black tubular sports bar<\/strong> at the rear and partially on the sides, with Legend 55 carvings<\/strong> on it. For extra security, Toyota fitted a lockable roller shutter<\/strong> over the load box<\/strong>, which simultaneously protects cargo from the natural elements as well. In standard garb it wears 265-60R18 alloys<\/strong> up front and 265-60R18 alloys<\/strong> at the rear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rear LED lights flank Toyota Hilux Legend 55 (and 4×4) words on the tailgate<\/strong>, with a bumper completing the visual aspect. Speaking of the tailgate, it continues to feature a soft-drop<\/strong> mechanism that lets it open softly, instead of dropping hard with a bang like in the old days. Very light to lift too. A little known trivia<\/strong> about the Legend 55 tailgate is that when it\u2019s open and is laying flat<\/strong>, it can carry about 300kg of weight<\/strong> without even flinching. A detachable tow bar is available for those whose adventures include caravans (3 500kg braked<\/strong>) or simply pulling on trailers (750kg unbraked<\/strong>). Big numbers indeed.
