One of the most open industry secrets<\/strong> of the past two years<\/strong> has been the fact that Toyota<\/strong> is launching the all-new, 9th<\/sup>-generation Hilux<\/strong> in 2026<\/strong>. Why recently when launching the Legend 55<\/strong> model in the Eastern Cape, the local outfit all but confirmed<\/strong> this. Though Toyota has a number of key models<\/strong> that drive sales globally<\/strong>, the Hilux is top among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the all-new car \u2013 revealed in Thailand<\/strong> earlier today \u2013 is not exactly all new in every sense of the word, it is extremely<\/strong> so. Set to be offered in single<\/strong>, Xtra and double cab<\/strong> versions, the formula remains largely the same. \u201cIf it ain\u2019t broken\u2026\u201d, they say. The front end with those slanted LED headlights<\/strong> and daytime running lights, reminds one of the new Corolla Cross<\/strong> front end, especially that grille with lots of trapezoidal shapes<\/strong>. Simultaneously there are bits that reminds one of current Hilux. The new car still rides on the old IMV<\/strong>, ladder frame platform. But is now heavily modified and can handle so much extra. Like an all-electric<\/strong> model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car is 5.3 metres long<\/strong> and has a wheelbase of 3m<\/strong>. Same as the current model that is built in Prospecton<\/strong>, Durban. The rear end has been redesigned<\/strong> as well, with a new bumper, tailgate<\/strong> and LED headlights.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toyota has completely<\/strong> redesigned and re-engineered<\/strong> the interior, which now looks much closer to the one found in the current Land Cruiser<\/strong> siblings. The multifunction steering<\/strong> wheel looks chunky and thankfully comes with actual buttons<\/strong>. Buttons also appear on the centre console and the dashboard for various reasons, including the electronic 4×4 adjustments<\/strong> for the 4×4 models. A new 31.2cm infotainment<\/strong> touch screen sits atop that dash and can access functions like Apple Carplay<\/strong>, Android Auto, radio function, Bluetooth<\/strong> connectivity and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of powertrains<\/strong>, three have been announced. The first is based on the existing 2.8-litre turbo diesel<\/strong> motor that makes 150kW<\/strong> and 500Nm<\/strong>. We may see the smaller 2.4-litre<\/strong> join the fray as well. Then there is a mild Hybrid<\/strong>, similar to, but more advanced than the one found in the current 48V models. Lastly and most interestingly is the fully-electric Hilux<\/strong> with an electric powertrain<\/strong> that makes 144kW<\/strong>. Toyota claims a range of between 240km<\/strong> and 300km<\/strong> for it. We will wait many years to see that one arrive in Mzansi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
