The Alfa Romeo Junior<\/strong> is finally in Mzansi<\/strong>. The Italian brand\u2019s very first-ever fully electric car<\/strong> is a sub-compact SUV that is simply dripping with sex appeal<\/strong>. Not the first time for an Alfa of course, so this is expected. We drove<\/strong> the range-topping Elettrica Veloce<\/strong> version for a week and the came out with some views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While sub-compact sounds quite tiny, the Junior is actually 4.17 metres<\/strong> long, 1.78m<\/strong> wide and 1.5m tall, which is par for the course<\/strong> in its segment. Stellantis<\/strong> \u2013 parent company of Alfa Romeo \u2013 has used existing technology<\/strong> found in the Group<\/strong> to ensure the Junior has the best of its world available for customers. But first, let\u2019s look at the design<\/strong> for a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The front end features a black front grille (Alfa calls it Progresso<\/strong> grille), with a blacked-out Alfa Romeo emblem<\/strong> partially carved onto the familiar nose. A casual look will not do; one has to take a closer look to see it. All the while a black and brushed metallic<\/strong> logo rests on the bonnet. Bladed LED<\/strong> headlights and daytime running lights blend in with the piano black<\/strong> bits, providing a complex but attractive look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving to the side profile we see a Junior reminiscent of a wave<\/strong> to the naked eye, as if it is wavy. The roof is black on the \u201cwhite Sempione<\/strong>\u201d body, rising from the bonnet to the C-pillar, where below the rear door handles<\/strong> appear. Alfa has reinterpreted the familiar brand wheel (they call it the Venti<\/strong> wheel) into the Junior, giving it a 20-inch<\/strong> circumference and 225\/40 R20 Michelin<\/strong> rubber. Those red<\/strong> branded brake calipers<\/strong> give the side profile added character. So does the flat red line at the bottom of front and rear doors. A lovely touch on the C-pillar<\/strong> is the embossed<\/strong> brand logo which you can barely see but can feel with your fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the rear end, the LED lights<\/strong> are tightly integrated into a piano black<\/strong> bar running across the car\u2019s width and dropping on the sides like a double blade. A small wiper sits atop the black rear glass<\/strong> and a black bumper<\/strong> with another red element<\/strong> completes the scene at the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We especially enjoyed the interior<\/strong> with some quirky<\/strong> features that only Alfa can produce. Firstly, the front seats are a work of art, with gaps in between them, an Alfa emblem on the headrest, some Alcantara<\/strong> on the arms and red stitching<\/strong>. While these Sabelt Corsa<\/strong> seats may don\u2019t look it, they are quite comfortable, in a sporty kind of way. They probably look even more dramatic<\/strong> from behind. Round<\/strong> elements like air vents and part of the instrument cluster<\/strong> hark back to classic Alfa. Alcantara and piano black finishes give the Junior a glossy<\/strong>, classy and yet sporty visual<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That flat-bottomed<\/strong> steering wheel is partly covered in leather and Alcantara, with bits of piano black and alloy metal. Interestingly the centre console \u2013 mainly covered in piano black and Alcantara \u2013 has an \u201cEngine Start\/ Stop<\/strong>\u201d button, considering the Junior is fully-powered by electricity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the powertrain. Alfa Romeo installed a 54 kWh<\/strong> and an electric motor<\/strong> placed on the front axle to assist the car to pull on its front wheels.<\/strong> Maximum power output is 207kW<\/strong> and 345Nm<\/strong> of torque. The brand claims a 0 \u2013 100km\/h<\/strong> sprint time of 5.9 seconds<\/strong> for this model. Top speed<\/strong> is rated at 200km\/h<\/strong>, which seems to arrive earlier than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course the main question is about the range. As previously stated, the Junior Veloce is a full-electric car with no petrol or diesel engine whatsoever. Pure electric<\/strong>. When full it will give a range<\/strong> of roughly 340km<\/strong>, which means one can drive for that distance<\/strong> \u2013 give or take depending on driving style<\/strong>, weather and other factors \u2013 without recharging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On paper it is enough to drive one between Johannesburg<\/strong> and major centres around the country, including Durban<\/strong>, Polokwane, Bloemfontein, Gqeberha and all the way to Cape Town<\/strong>. How? Because the major freeways<\/strong> connecting all these cities have chargers located along them. Fast chargers too. At destination one can plug in with the supplied portable charger<\/strong> that sits in the boot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take-off is quite instantaneous<\/strong>, as expected of an EV, with a prod on the accelerator<\/strong> all that is needed. No hesitation, just a slight spin<\/strong> of the wheel is it seeks to establish traction in milliseconds<\/strong>. The car then gets going rapidly<\/strong>. Steering is quite precise, very impressive<\/strong> and fun. Electric cars don\u2019t make an engine sound<\/strong>, but the Junior Veloce offers a distinctive electric<\/strong> vibe. It accompanies the velocity pound for pound<\/strong>, as once gains momentum<\/strong>. Stopping power is pretty strong too, thanks to those powerful brakes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who seek a new way of celebrating<\/strong> the iconic Alfa Romeo brand, Junior Veloce offers a range of thrills, practical applications<\/strong> and a real sense of Alfisti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
