Volkswagen<\/strong> has announced the all-new shape Golf<\/strong>. The hatchback, which will also be referred to as Golf 8<\/strong> or Golf Mk8<\/strong>, will take over the mantle and run with the title of \u201cmost successful European car for more than four decades\u201d. Big boots<\/strong> to fill, but Volkswagen is confident the new Golf will do its duty and impress. Best news is that it is definitely coming to Mzansi<\/strong> during the fourth quarter of 2020<\/strong> in three models<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the base will be the Golf TSI<\/strong>, followed by the Golf GTI<\/strong> and then the Golf R<\/strong>. The first two will arrive here at the same time, while the Golf R will follow. Most interesting is that all three will come fitted exclusively with a DSG automatic gearbox<\/strong>. That means there will no longer<\/strong> be a manual transmission <\/strong>in any new Golf model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of appearance the car exhibits a strong evolution rather than an evolution, over the outgoing Golf 7. Highlights include the new no-fuss front grille, unique LED headlights<\/strong> (Matrix LED will be optional on higher models), a really clean side profile with a thick C-pillar, and large rear LED lights. That clean look is carried into the interior where the centre console has large storage spaces<\/strong>, thanks in part to the smaller, stubby gear lever. The infotainment touch screen<\/strong> will display all the relevant information, while music and Bluetooth<\/strong> sounds come out of the Harman Kardon<\/strong> sound system, which replaces the beloved but largely anonymous Dynaudio<\/strong> brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst Volkswagen has shown pictures of the car, many other details have not been released yet. What we do know is that the TSI will be powered by a 1.4-litre turbo<\/strong> engine that produces 110kW<\/strong> of power. The GTI and R \u201cVrrrrrrrpha<\/strong>!\u201d models will both carry a 2.0-litre turbo<\/strong> engine. No power figures<\/strong> were released, but we do know the R will be fitted with 4Motion<\/strong> all-wheel-drive (AWD). Some markets will be getting a plug-in hybrid<\/strong> Golf too with up to 180kW<\/strong>, but it is not coming to Mzansi. At least not in the next few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice that there is no diesel (TDI<\/strong>) mentioned. Volkswagen currently sees no need for such a model, especially given that South Africans have not been buying the Golf TDI as much as was expected. A model that might make it here is the eTSI<\/strong> that features a belt starter<\/strong> generator and 48V lithium-ion<\/strong> battery, making it a mild hybrid<\/strong>. It has three stages of tune, namely 81kW<\/strong>, 96kW<\/strong> and 110kW<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkswagen says the new Golf is the most connected ever. It is \u201calways on<\/strong>\u201d, according to officials. Whilst we don\u2019t exactly know what this means in the South African context yet, we can hope that at least most of these technologies<\/strong> make it here too. One such tech is the app that connects your smart phone to the car wirelessly<\/strong>, instead of the current situation where you need a USB<\/strong> cable to enable Apple Carplay<\/strong> or Android Auto<\/strong> for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something called Car2X<\/strong> was also listed as a feature. This is the ability of the Golf to communicate<\/strong> with external structures and objects so as to increase safety. An example is when the car uses swarm intelligence to learn about impending traffic obstacles<\/strong>, or an approaching ambulance before the driver is even aware of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
