CHANGAN UNI-S AIMS TO BOOST BRAND SALES

Changan has launched a new entry-level SUV called the Uni-S in the Mzansi market. The Uni-S enters a very busy market segment, with competitors from pretty much every brand being represented. So what exactly is the Uni-S? well, the Uni-S is an SUV in the sub-compact segment, attempting to strike that sweet spot between nimble urban agility and the presence needed for weekend getaways or family hauls. The car is aimed squarely at the 25 to 45 age group, male and female, upper middle income. These are the buyers who want more than just transport; they seek a vehicle that fits seamlessly into an active, aspirational lifestyle, whether it’s commuting to the office, heading out for a braai or simply making the daily school run feel a little more premium.

I drove the Uni-S on a placid Gauteng day, around the Tshwane area. The exterior, while it has somewhat of a familiar look, is also different, with a large front grille commanding attention, LED headlights that hug the front grille, an LED light bar joining them for a sleek, uninterrupted glow, and rear light bars that echo the same modern confidence. From the side, the sloping roofline delivers an almost coupe-like stance, blending practicality with a touch of sporting elegance. It’s the kind of silhouette that turns heads, one way or the other.

I also noticed that the interior is pretty familiar too. A large screen, stretching across from the centre dashboard to the far right of the steering wheel divides itself into a 32.5cm touch bit and a 26cm LCD instrument cluster. Bluetooth, radio, Android Auto and Apple Carplay with mapping are included.

Evolution, it seems, is the name of the game. Like so many successful models before it, the Uni-S doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel but refines what works. The result is a vehicle that feels fresh yet reassuring, one that slots into daily life without demanding you learn new tricks. That coupe-inspired profile isn’t just for show; it gives the Uni-S a dynamic presence that aligns beautifully with the aspirations of its target audience.

Under the bonnet, the Uni-S gets down to business with a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine (yet another familiar item) producing 138kW and 300Nm of torque. Paired as standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the powertrain offers good acceleration and overtaking, and is relatively smooth while crawling through heavy traffic, as we found out during our drive.

Part of what sets the Uni-S apart in this crowded segment is the chassis engineering. Independent multi-link rear suspension is standard across the range, delivering a composed, planted ride that soaks up varied road surfaces with surprising poise. Whether navigating potholed suburban streets or cruising the smooth curves of the freeway, the suspension keeps body movements in check and maintains a level of comfort that belies the competitive pricing. For the normal buyer, this translates into less fatigue on those longer family trips and a more engaging drive when the mood strikes.

The three trim line-up – CS, CL and CE – caters to different pockets within the target market. The entry-level CS is said to deliver the core Uni-S experience without compromise on the essentials, including that engine, slick transmission and sophisticated suspension. Step up to the CL and the enhancements begin to reflect a more discerning lifestyle, while the range-topping CE wraps it all in the fullest expression of the design language, features and equipment. Across the board, the Uni-S feels like a vehicle built with some insight into what buyers in this income bracket currently want.

Changan is planting some real roots in Mzansi, with 25 dealerships currently at play, and an additional 20 more being planned over the next 18 months. Last month – March 2026 – Changan sold 118 new cars, which is not a lot, but seems to be promising for a brand that’s only been relaunched a few months ago. The Uni-S could assist in at least doubling that sales figure, if marketing and after-sales do their part properly.
