Mzansi’s new vehicle market (Passenger and LCV) continues to show impressive resilience in 2026. In May 2026, the total industry recorded approximately 51 071 units sold, which is yet another solid performance that builds on the strong momentum seen throughout the year. In fact, this is the highest monthly total since May 2013 and puts the projected total sales for 2026 in the 630 000 vicinity. It compares well to the 45 287 units sold in May 2025, reflecting continued consumer confidence despite economic headwinds.

Year-to-Date (YTD) sales for 2026 now sit at 260 909 units, with the market maintaining healthy double-digit growth overall. Toyota once again dominated the leader board with 10 667 units, while Chinese brands continue their aggressive climb up the rankings. Most notable in that group was Jetour, which swiftly moved right below parent Chery with a staggering 2 020 units, another record for the brand.

The top 10 manufacturers tell a story of evolving preferences in Mzansi, with a healthy mix of established players and rising challengers fighting for every sale. Dealer channels remain the backbone of the market, showing buyers are still committing to new metal in meaningful numbers.
