The Audi Q7 has been a staple in the premium SUV segment for over two decades, battling it out with the likes of BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz ML/GLE and Range Rover Sport. Now in its third-generation, it promises to build on the solid legacy with even more versatility, space, and performance.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner sums it up thus: “This model carries forward the Q7’s mission as the perfect premium SUV”. Therefore, witness an evolution in design with a more conventional silhouette, unlike the model it immediately replaces. In addition, digital lighting tech, and an interior that maximizes space are probably going to be standard garb, as per normal Q7 spec. Variable seating for up to 7 passengers makes it a contender for “family hero”, while the illuminated panoramic sunroof with switchable transparency is a new innovation for this brand.

Powertrain highlights include a 3.0-litre V6 TDI turbo diesel with two different outputs of 180kW and 500Nm, as well as 220kW and 630Nm of torque. Audi has included its MHEV plus technology and an electric-powered compressor for what it calls a “sharp response”. Permanent quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard, delivering the traction and confidence needed for our mixed road surfaces. Claimed efficiency figures hover in the 7 to 8L/100km combined, which would be of assistance during these terribly high diesel price times.

Keep in mind that Audi is still on track to launch the Q9 this year as well, meaning the Q7 will no longer be the brand’s flagship SUV.
