Volkswagen has patented a new system in its native Germany. The system – pictured in this patent sketch here – is meant to make it easier for drivers to control certain systems in the car without using their hands. But it appears the effect might be quite the opposite.
Essentially what the control system does is that it senses and looks in the eyes of the driver. The driver then looks at the component they want to control, and simply by doing that, can control that component. For example, they look at the sound volume control and the volume goes up or down. Obviously then there are issues with this, one of which is how does the car know exactly what you want to control and if in fact, you want to control that part? Looking at the sunroof could get it opened, when all the driver wanted to do was stretch their eyes. Of course Artificial Intelligence will play a huge role in the system, but AI itself still has a lot of glitches.
