BYD South Africa seems to have risen from its long slumber. The company is churning out new product after new product, and starting to back it up with a stronger marketing push than ever before. Mind you, BYD is the best-selling car brand in China. By far. This time around they’ve announced that their new Sea Lion 5 will be available to Mzansi buyers before this year is over.

The Sea Lion 5 is a plug-in Hybrid SUV that measures 4.7 metres in length, 1.7m in height and has a wheelbase of 2.7m. It comes with a 1.5 litre generator that works with the battery system and motor to generate some 145kW and 300Nm of torque for the front wheels. Importantly, BYD says it will achieve a total range of 1 000km, with EV-only range pegged at 71km.

“BYD is not just a car manufacturer. We’re a technology company focused on creating a cleaner, smarter future. The Sea Lion 5 represents how innovation can meet real South African needs, combining energy efficiency, advanced safety, and everyday utility,” says Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director, BYD Auto South Africa.
