Is this Duster a new car?
The Renault Duster EDC 4×2 is a new model built on Renault’s CMF-B modular platform. It is the third generation, representing a clear step forward for this long-standing compact SUV. It remains a practical choice for buyers who need something capable on light gravel roads or weekend trips, while staying affordable and straightforward for daily use in and around the city.

Do you like the boxier looks?
Yes, they work. The exterior has been updated with a boxier shape that gives it a more modern and purposeful appearance compared to the previous generation. The new Renault front end includes a rectangular grille and LED headlights, while the black cladding along the sides adds to the rugged character. One noticeable design detail is the hidden rear door handle, which is a neat and subtle touch. Something to note for future designs; this type of door handle does not work well for children, considering they normally use the rear doors. They struggle to reach and open the doors.

Any improvement on the interior build quality?
Inside, the build quality feels slightly improved over the older model, though it retains the Duster’s characteristic no-frills approach. Fabric seats are practical for everyday wear and tear. Some of the plastics look acceptable but remain hard and lightweight. The cabin includes a small, well-shaped gear lever, an electromagnetic handbrake, a multifunction steering wheel, and the old school Renault volume control knob positioned behind the wheel. The infotainment system connects reliably with Android Auto for phone integration.

How are the driving dynamics?
Driving the Duster is straightforward. Handling is competent for normal conditions, though throttle response can feel a bit sluggish at low speeds. The EDC automatic transmission shifts smoothly once underway though. The 1.3-litre turbo engine provides adequate performance for most situations – enough for carrying passengers and luggage without feeling underpowered. Fuel range reached approximately 550km from a full tank in mixed driving, which is reasonable for this class.

Is the new Duster worth a look?
Where the Duster stands out is in its value proposition. Priced from around R490 000 for the Zen EDC 4×2 up to R520 000 for the Intens trim (with added equipment such as a 360-degree camera and blind-spot monitoring), it offers modern features, decent interior space, and a tough, adventure-ready look without the higher costs associated with more polished competitors. It suits buyers looking for an honest, functional SUV for family duties, occasional dirt roads, or simply getting from A to B without excess. It is noticeably better than its predecessor in design, refinement, and technology, while keeping the core strengths of affordability and durability that made the Duster popular in the first place.
