Precipice. June 2026 could be the true precipice of our automotive market shift, if the latest new vehicle sales figures are anything to go by. Yes we have seen a notable movement over the past five years in how the market has behaved. But June 2026 appears to be taking it to another level. For one, it’s the highest new vehicles sales month since June 2007, with 54 482 units overall, of which 38 393 were accounted for by Passenger Cars and 13 171 units were Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV), which includes bakkies and panel vans.
Secondly, several manufacturers seem to have gone neck and neck on the sales charts. In fact, three pairs recorded exactly the same number of sales each. This means a number of brands that have been ahead of the other, are soon to vacate that position in the next few months. Precipice.
The year 2026 looks set to achieve another 600 000 unit mark, perhaps even tip into 620 000 or 630 000. Since January, the industry has sold 315 303 units.
