Tata Motors has returned to Mzansi and they will be launching four new cars into our market. The Indian conglomerate that also owns the JLR business says it has a comprehensive plan to capture a respectable share of the market, starting with attractive prices for its cars. One of the four now available from the nationwide dealerships is the Tiago entry-level hatch.
I know the Tiago name sounds familiar, and that is because of the Volkswagen Taigo. But of course, completely different cars. Tiago comes with a hatch shape, sits four or five people and is priced from R184 900 for the XM trim with a 5-speed manual transmission. Not the cheapest car in the country, but certainly one of them.
Paired with that gearbox is a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine, good for 63kW and 113Nm of torque. An Automated Manual Transmission is also available. I do hope this option is smoother than other AMT transmissions I have driven before, which were quite jerky on the move. Tata reckons fuel average consumption would be around 5 litres per 100km for this baby.
“The Tiago is a game changer for urban South Africans who want a stylish, safe, and affordable hatchback,” says Thato Magasa, CEO Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Distributor. “It delivers practicality for everyday use while ensuring premium comfort and peace of mind”.
