One of the most open industry secrets of the past two years has been the fact that Toyota is launching the all-new, 9th-generation Hilux in 2026. Why recently when launching the Legend 55 model in the Eastern Cape, the local outfit all but confirmed this. Though Toyota has a number of key models that drive sales globally, the Hilux is top among them.

While the all-new car – revealed in Thailand earlier today – is not exactly all new in every sense of the word, it is extremely so. Set to be offered in single, Xtra and double cab versions, the formula remains largely the same. “If it ain’t broken…”, they say. The front end with those slanted LED headlights and daytime running lights, reminds one of the new Corolla Cross front end, especially that grille with lots of trapezoidal shapes. Simultaneously there are bits that reminds one of current Hilux. The new car still rides on the old IMV, ladder frame platform. But is now heavily modified and can handle so much extra. Like an all-electric model.

The car is 5.3 metres long and has a wheelbase of 3m. Same as the current model that is built in Prospecton, Durban. The rear end has been redesigned as well, with a new bumper, tailgate and LED headlights.

Toyota has completely redesigned and re-engineered the interior, which now looks much closer to the one found in the current Land Cruiser siblings. The multifunction steering wheel looks chunky and thankfully comes with actual buttons. Buttons also appear on the centre console and the dashboard for various reasons, including the electronic 4×4 adjustments for the 4×4 models. A new 31.2cm infotainment touch screen sits atop that dash and can access functions like Apple Carplay, Android Auto, radio function, Bluetooth connectivity and others.

In terms of powertrains, three have been announced. The first is based on the existing 2.8-litre turbo diesel motor that makes 150kW and 500Nm. We may see the smaller 2.4-litre join the fray as well. Then there is a mild Hybrid, similar to, but more advanced than the one found in the current 48V models. Lastly and most interestingly is the fully-electric Hilux with an electric powertrain that makes 144kW. Toyota claims a range of between 240km and 300km for it. We will wait many years to see that one arrive in Mzansi.
