BMW South Africa began producing the new-generation X3 in late 2024, and launched it to the media earlier in 2025. The car has been a hit with both buyers and Motoring media commentators, to such an extent that it eventually won the coveted 2025 South African Car of the Year competition sponsored by Old Mutual Insure.

When launched to media, the X3 was only available with a 20d, 30e (plug-in Hybrid) and M50 models. Now BMW is offering potential buyers an entry-level petrol model called the X3 20 Pure Design. It comes standard with items like 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, comfort access for the electrically-adjustable seats, and something called Veganza synthetic leather. A Harman/ Kardon sound system works with the touch screen infotainment system.

As far as the petrol engine is concerned, it measure 2.0-litres, has 48V mild Hybrid technology and a turbo charger. Maximum power is 148kW and torque is 335Nm between 1 500rpm and 4 000rpm. BMW claims the X3 20 Pure Design will return an average of 7.5 litres of petrol per 100km, and achieve a top speed of 218km/h. No other performance figures have been provided.
“The BMW X3 20 Pure Design is a strategic addition to our line-up: we want to ensure we have a petrol offer that is attractive alongside the dominant BMW X3 20d M Sport derivative to ensure we cater to a range of customers,” said Jean-Francois Bidard, Head of Product Management at BMW South Africa. “In the BMW X3 20 Pure Design, we are offering customers an opportunity to balance innovation, performance and luxury with broader accessibility. This new derivative reflects our ongoing commitment to evolving the Rosslyn-built BMW X3 portfolio, while responding to market demand in the premium segment.”
